Miami Art Basel -> sunshine, design, music, good crowd

I am about one year late with this one; however, this may just be the perfect time to put you in the mood for the upcoming Miami Art Basel 2013, which will take place on December 5-8.

Where great art meets sunshine and equally great music, you know you will meet interesting crowd. This venue gathers fun loving art lovers from around World; a more mature crowd with more refined taste and acute sense of design. Yes, there are parties but it is not a party focused venue. A little culture is always good for the soul. Over 250 of the world’s leading galleries exhibit art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries by over 4,000 artists. You can buy a detailed guide to this year's exhibits from Hatje Cantz.

So if you are thinking of visiting this sunny city this year, here are some useful tips:

Where to stay

You can always search for hotels and you may find some decent deals if you look early enough; however, be prepared to pay US$200 and up…way up.

My suggestion, and this is what I did this year, is to look around on AirBnb. You can find a great apartment in central location or right by the beach for around $150 - $200 / night. Mind you it is an apartment and so it fits 4-6 people, which leaves you paying about $50.  And you can always find some last minute friends, who will be begging you for that extra room. I was one of them last year and was lucky that my best friend Bibi adopted me for the ride to remember :) Worst case scenario, you pay the same price as hotel for a nice big crib all for yourself.

The main art galleries and expos are in Miami Beach around 25-17th St. and Collins, around the Miami Beach Convention Center; however, you will also visit the Design District and some galleries in Downtown. Now, most parties are happening on South Beach. So…your strategic geographic location would be between 20th – 14th St. and Collins. This way you are walking, or at least short taxi, distance from most of the events, and you are next to the beach and steps away from Lincoln Road, where I know you will want to go shopping.
Where to eat

Where to party

Ok, it is not that easy to get into the good parties. You have to be on the list, have some important friends, or be a VIP yourself.  And btw, the best parties are the private house parties; the above equally applies. So I will give you some ideas and wish you luck with working your charm:

Soho House located on 43rd & Collins, it is the chic to be seen membership only club, but as I said, make friends.

The Wall its on 22nd & Collins. Oh look! close to your strategic home location. You can go wild and maybe even find your place without getting lost.

Le Baron where is Le Baron?...well, we don't know because this popular party spot changes its location each night so stay tuned to find out each evening at 6pm where the action is that night.

Nikki Beach famous Miami beach party place with beds on the sandy beach, half naked party people, good DJs, and hot bodies. Located in South Beach.

I am not even touching on the restaurants because there are too many excellent choices. One advise, make reservations before you even get there because that week is in high demand and crisis or no crisis money is not an issue for the visitors of the Basel scene.

Ok, let's check out some art pieces from last year to put you in the mood ;)

Great food and great people with awesome styling and interior. Also great venues for cheap happy hour drinks. However, the downstairs beer selection is about as standard as it can be while upstairs can be a bit more creative.
