Buenos Aires: Thursday

One of the great advantages of Buenos Aires is that it is a very walkable and bikeable city. All along Libertador Avenue there is a long stretch of parks and lakes where you can run, rollerblade and bike. Also, this year the government of Buenos Aires followed the green movement of the larger neighboring cities such as Bogota and Mexico and invested in the development of official protected bike routes through the program called “Mejor en Bici”. You can’t use these bikes as they serve as an eco mode of transportation for the residents of Buenos Aires but you can certainly rent your own bike and explore the city in a safe manner using the official bike paths. Here is the link to the latest Map of bike designated routes.

You can either do a bike tour with Bicicleta Naranja or you can rent a bike from the same company and explore the city on your own. They will give you a map. If you go for the tour, I recommend to visit the “lakes and woods” in the north or go to Tigre.

From Palermo the tours leave every day at 2pm and from San Telmo at 9:30am and 2pm. The recommended lakes and woods tour leaves from Palermo at 2pm.

BA night out
Osaka

Restaurant recommendations for tonight are:

The hip and in of Palermo
Osaka – Peruvian. Order the hot stone ceviche.
Cluny
Paru – Peruvian fusion. I recommend the spicy grill wok. (Bonpland 1823, Palermo Hollywood, Tel 4778-3307)
Cluny – contemporary (El Salvador 4618. Tel: 4831-7176)
Fin del Mundo – the official restaurant from the Fin del Mundo Winery (Honduras, Palermo Hollywood, Tel: 4852-6661)
Sipan – fusion cuisine with an opened kitchen
Don Julio – parilla (Guatemala 4691, Palermo, Tel: 4831-9564)
La Cabrera – parilla (Cabrera 5127, Palermo, Tel 4832-5754)

The unusual
Te matare Ramirez – afrodisiac restaurant with erotic shows. On Thursday they have a muppet show that will surprise you and make you laugh. It is worth a visit and the food is very good as well.

The secret

"Closed door" restaurants serve dinners at private homes of the local chefs. You have to reserve well in advance as the sitting is limited and demand is high. A great experience with excellent food served at the chef’s home. Highly recommended. Also please note that these restaurants are only opened from Thur-Sat in most cases.

Casa Salt Shaker – the most popular seating about 12 people
Treinta Sillas – the romantic
Casa Coupage – the most commercial as they recently moved to a rented space but the food is amazing and it’s run by two sommeliers so get ready for a proper wine tasting experience with your dinner.

Drinks and Activities:

Option #1: culture

Dinner and Tango Show at Senor Tango. Dinner starts at 8:30pm

Or

Tango class at La Viruta. La Viruta in Palermo is a popular Tango and Molonga bar where you can take classes and stay on practicing. On Thursday the tango class begins at 6pm or at 9:30pm.

Option #2: party

Isabel Bar & Restaurant
Begin drinks starting at 10-11pm either at Isabel in Palermo (Uriarte 1664, Tel: 4834-6969), where the rich and famous party animals gather for a “pre” before heading to Tequila. Or another good option is Faena Hotel in Puerto Madero. Thursday is also the best at Faena featuring live music and drinks by the gorgeous pool designed by Philip Stark.

Faena Hotel Pool

Faena Hotel Bar

For night clubs, Thursday is the night of Tequila (Av. Costanera Norte Rafael Obligado esq. La Pampa, Tel: 4781-6555), but you have to arrive early if you want to get in. If you come after 2am, don’t even bother unless you are coming with Paris Hilton.

Niceto Club

For the lovers of electronic music, it is also the best night to go to Niceto Club and dance the night away till the morning sunshine brings you back to reality…ouch.

The bike tours seem to be my thing. I believe it is one of the great ways to get to know a city since you will not only go to tourist places but also to other neighbourhoods where you can explore the real life of the citizens. The buenos aires apartment I was staying in when I travelled to Argentina was in Palermo, but I wanted to go to other places where tourists were not the majority so I chose Villa del Parque. Very nice!
